You know the feeling. It's 2:17pm, your brain has turned to fog, your body feels like it's moving through wet concrete, and you still have four hours left on the clock. So you reach for another coffee, get a half-hour reprieve, and then crash even harder.

What if the real culprit - and the real fix - was sitting on your plate at lunch?

Meet the Glycemic Index

The glycemic index (GI) is a scale that measures how quickly a food is digested and the sugars absorbed into your bloodstream. Pure glucose sits at the top (100): the maximum blood sugar spike. Every other food is ranked relative to that benchmark.

The higher the GI, the faster the spike. And the faster the spike, the harder the crash.

Why? High GI foods cause a rapid rise in blood sugar, which triggers your body to release a surge of insulin to bring it back down. That overcorrection is what leaves you slumped at your desk wondering if 2pm is an acceptable time to call it a day.

  • High GI (70+): Fast digestion, quick energy, inevitable crash. Think white bread, processed cereals, pretzels, instant mash, rice cakes, and plain bagels.

  • Low GI (under 55): Slower digestion, steady energy, no crash. Think proteins, healthy fats, fiber-rich foods, whole grains, most fruits and vegetables.

  • Middle ground (55–70): Worth knowing — not all "healthy" foods are low GI, and not all treats are high.

Your GI Cheat Sheet

Low GI — Eat More (under 55)
Chickpeas and beans, peanuts, rolled oats, whole milk, low-fat yogurt, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat, whole wheat pasta, most fruits, most vegetables

Middle Ground — Eat Mindfully (55–70)
Pineapple, raisins, cantaloupe, pita, pumpernickel bread, couscous, basmati rice, popcorn, honey

High GI — Eat Less (70+)
White baguette, white rice, pretzels, rice cakes, instant mash, cornflakes, Rice Krispies, plain bagels, waffles, soda, crackers, sports drinks

The Takeaway

No crash diets. No miserable meals you'll abandon by Thursday. Just one simple principle: build your meals around low GI foods, and if a high GI favorite is non-negotiable, pair it with something lower on the scale - a protein, a healthy fat or some fiber to blunt the sugar spike.

Proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats? Eat more. Ultra-processed foods, sugary snacks, refined carbs? Eat less, or at least pair them smarter.

The afternoon slump isn't inevitable. It's mostly a lunch choice. 🥗

Be inquisitive, be safe, and keep living the good life.
